Hey Friends. Wow! Anyone observing the stock market over the recent past has likely experienced dizzy spells. While major indices have trended down into correction territory, intraday moves have often literally been akin to the movements of a yo-yo.

The stock market doesn’t like uncertainty — well, not just the stock market, people don’t like uncertainty. Economic uncertainties are all around us and there’s no need for me to list them out in order to have an “amen” corner. Yet, this physical life we know from day to day is filled with all manner of uncertainty. It’s not just economic uncertainty. And how can we ever truly be secure if what we stake our lives upon is completely uncertain?

While the Lord might call me Home before tomorrow, in human years, my life span to date doesn’t yet reflect what most would think of as very elderly. However, I’ve been blessed with enough time on earth to have a solid grasp of how quickly whatever time remains here will elapse.

Perhaps this scripture from James 4:14 is familiar to you:

“whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.”(NKJV, Bible)

We all struggle with how to deal with the uncertainties of this earthly life. I know that I do. We can turn to this or that to cope and indeed there are more self-help manuals out there than one can enumerate.

There is one certainty about all of our physical lives. These physical lives are temporary and as the verse from James says above, “vanish away.” Whatever I cling to during this time on earth must have eternal certainty for there to be any such thing as “Absolute Security” in the here and now.

Those of you who have followed my blogging have observed from time to time me pointing to Jesus Christ. It’s because He is my true security and He is to anyone and everyone who takes Him at His Word. I imagine John 3:16 is the best known Bible verse to mankind. It shares the simple truth about eternal security. It states:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (NKJV, Bible)

For anyone who takes God at His Word and believes in Jesus Christ, the One who died for our sins and rose again — to that person, God guarantees the certainty of eternal life; Jesus becomes an absolute anchor in life to that person. Clinging fast to His promise found in John 3:16 not only gives us assurance of what comes when this physical life closes, but also calms our hearts and minds in the presence of anxieties and fears that we face each day; yes, and even anxiety over what happens next to my stock portfolio. The Bible tells us all about Jesus and the more I listen to His Words and come to know Him deeper, the more thankful I am to Him for His grace and forgiveness; and the easier I rest through all the turmoil of living in this topsy-turvy world.

I pray that whatever uncertainties you’re facing today, these words might bring encouragement.

May God bless you and see you next time.

Paul
